8th Gr. Promotion Information

Eighth Grade Parents,

We are approaching a very exciting time of year… A time where students are acknowledged and rewarded for all their hard work while at Martinez Junior High School. Please take the time to go through this packet so you and your eighth grader will know what is approaching and expected. As a staff, we are looking forward to seeing the culmination of a wonderful three years we have spent with your child.

Please either reference our school website, call or email with any questions.

Sincerely,
Katie Martin

Discovery Kingdom/Six Flags:

The eighth grade class trip to Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo is Monday, June 4. Eligible students going to Discovery Kingdom will depart from school by bus at 8:45am and return to campus around 4:45pm. A complete lunch is provided to all students in the Picnic Grove area.

A $35 donation will help offset the cost of entrance to the park, lunch and transportation. For those students with a current season pass to Discovery Kingdom, the donation requested is $20 to cover lunch and transportation. Please attach cash or check (payable to MJHS) when returning these forms to the Main Office.

ALL STUDENTS WHO ATTEND THE SIX FLAGS DISCOVERY KINGDOM TRIP MUST TRAVEL TO AND RETURN FROM THE TRIP ON THE SAME BUS. THE BUSES NEED TO RETURN TO MJHS BETWEEN 4:30-5:00pm. THIS MEANS THAT STUDENTS MUST BE AT THE DOLPHIN FOUNTAIN BY 3:45 p.m. STUDENTS SHOULD WEAR A WATCH OR CARRY A CELL PHONE, AS BEING ON TIME IS VERY IMPORTANT.

Please understand that because of the need to make advanced purchases and commitments for tickets, there will be NO REFUNDS. PTA is helping cover some of the cost, but no child will be denied participation for non-payment.

BEHAVIOR EXPECTATIONS FOR SIX FLAGS DISCOVERY KINGDOM

Adult chaperones and MJHS staff members will accompany the 8th graders on this trip. Students will be informed of a common meeting place in the park where they will always be able to find an MJHS adult. Once inside the park, students will be free to go off in small groups unaccompanied by adults to attend events or go on rides of their choice. It is expected that all students will conduct themselves in an appropriate manner while at the park. Although we are off campus, students must remember that this is a school day and a school event, and all school rules still apply.

If students are engaged in any activities that result in suspension while on the trip, they may NOT be allowed to attend the 8th grade promotion.

STUDENTS WHO ARE NOT GOING TO SIX FLAGS DISCOVERY KINGDOM

The Six flags Discovery Kingdom trip is a school event taking place on a school day. If you are ill or on LOP, your parents may follow the usual call-in procedure to report your absence. Any MJHS student who is at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom is required to travel to and from with their classmates and school-sponsored chaperones. An MJHS student who is not signed up for Six Flags and is not at school or legally excused by a parent, is cutting school according to school attendance law. Consequences will be assigned.

Promotion Rehearsal:

Thursday, June 7, MJHS students must be dropped off at AHS, in front of the PAB by 9:00am. They are not to come to MJHS in the morning. MJHS staff will walk the students back to MJHS when practice is over, around 11:30am. Students are NOT allowed anywhere else on the AHS campus as final exams will be taking place. If your child is not participating in the ceremony, they are to report to the Main Office at MJHS on June 7 at 8:30am.

Promotion Ceremony:

The promotion ceremony is Thursday, June 7 at 7:00pm and is about an hour long. Students not eligible to promote are not allowed to attend the ceremony. Eighth grade students must report to the field for line up by 6:00pm.

The SUGGESTED dress guidelines for the Promotion Ceremony can be described as "dressy casual".   BOYS: Shirts and slacks or dress shorts are suggested; tie or jacket are optional; NO tuxedos or parts of tuxedos. GIRLS: Strapless anything, mini-skirts, bare backs or low cut tops and bare midriffs are NOT recommended. Yes, you may wear spaghetti straps. In addition, girls must not wear heels less than one-inch wide. The heels will sink into the turf and track at Alhambra High School, possibly causing injury to the student and damage to the grounds. FOR EVERYONE: No hats, t-shirts or casual shorts; no limousines or other over-the-top displays.
